Sometimes its a pain....

Lucien Oct 28, 2003 03:40 PM

Well, Had 2 of my females drop pups last night.. and a 3rd hemorrage badly... I gave her about 4 hrs before I took matters into my own hands. She was bleeding so badly it was spread across the cage...and it was bright red...like arterial blood.. so I euthanized her... and did an emergency C-section. She only had 8 pups.. but they were abnormally large which is what I think caused her problem. I managed to get 4 breathing... and moving but they were all very cold... 2 of them died about an hour later.. but the other 2 are now breathing and moving and feeding from my other female who takes care of everything. What I'm not sure of is what the long term effects on these pups might be. It took me about 10 minutes to deliver all of them.. And the last 2 are the ones who are still alive... These two are probably going to be food however...I'm not positive yet.. Depends on how well they do... I just would like to know what these 2 might be facing in terms of possible health problems.

Well, the 2 pups made it through the night. They've eaten so I'm hoping their functions won't be impaired at all... My other female is taking care of them very well...

One thing that I know is a problem (sometimes) with human babies that are delivered by C-section is that the fluid in their lungs is not expelled like it would be by having to squeeze through the birth canal.

Watch for breathing problems. If you see a problem, maybe they had excess fluid present that made it hard for them to breath.
