Trying to make my dry enclosures more realistic...

AnthonyChodan Oct 28, 2003 05:37 PM

Today was my day off aka cleaning day. I tried something different today. After I cleaned out the aquariums and put the cypress mulch bedding in, I sprinkled some native leaves on the floor. I have a nice mix in my neighborhood and some small piles have started to form in the yard from maple, sweet gum, white oak, and black oak. I sprayed them with provent a mite and sprinkled them over the bedding. I really like the effect and will continue to do so! I'm sorry, but you have to change newspaper way too frequently!!

I would suggest this mix. It's not as heavy as the soil/sand mix and looks pretty nice.

but there are inherent problems w/ naturalistic set-ups esp. w/ large snakes. these will become apparent after awhile. good luck however!.........dannio

Your set up displays the snakes natural beauty in a more natural looking eniornment. Bravo! Husbandry will be hard, but the visual effect seems to be worth it. Thank you for sharing.

Geez, guys...I'm getting old. When I read what Fred posted, I read "Great job A.C., nice natural loooking viagra."

Fred Albury Oct 29, 2003 12:40 PM

Old Herper,

"Natural viagra"....from a plant you chew. now THAT would be something. you could grow your own stash of viagra on your porch. If anyone asks you could say it was a cooking herb. lol
Things here are better in some areas and worse in others, wont go into detail here, will email you.

You know, I've considered that. I'm supposed to wear glasses, but I don't. They are a pain in the ass and I have trouble using contacts, so I just figure that anybody that doesn't want to get run over should just stay off the road (and sidewalks) when I'm driving. If Mr. Magoo and Shirley Muldowney had a baby together it would have been me. I can't really see where I'm going, but I make great time.

Well it's not really an indigo issue (here we go again) But I can tell you. It DOES work. I was 20X400...I used Magoo as a guide! I had it July 10th. It is painless and takes less than 15 min. The next morning I was 20X20. I went to Rand (which is the best in Fla) and it cost a total of $3800. 3 months later, my vision is 20X15.

20/15!! Yikes! Wow, who knew that the imporvements were THAT great. Food for thought. On a lighter note, Old Herper, you might not want to admit to driving without specs on the roads of America, I came here and got jumped on about the very same thing. Trolls, you know who they are.

Nice job! I will be curious to hear how the maintenance of this enclosure goes. Our wildlife center is getting our indigo exhibit ready to go and it will feature a sandy soil/peat mixture with forest humus and dried leaf litter on the surface. I know it will look great and we'll see how it holds up to the "poopinator!"

A.C. Oct 30, 2003 05:25 AM

I appreciate the kind words! The silk plants I use do get trampled on, but they hold up pretty well. The leaves are fine as are the cypress mulch. I still have not had really bad experiences with the pooping everyone talks about. Sometimes, when I let the newspaper get a lil overdue, it stinks, but the snakes kept on the cypress are fine! No real smell or anything (nothing worse thah a pit or getula the same size. My biggest dry's are 5', so maybe when they're 7-8' it'll be worse?! Let's hope not!

my Drys hide almost all of the time. They really aren't good display snakes, at least for me.
