New baby corn Lav shed perfectly till the tail what now?

earthpig23 Oct 28, 2003 09:27 PM

I feel like a newbie with this but honestly i've never had that much trouble with shedding in my herps. It is the Lav's first shed ( recently purchased from Kathy a month ago beutiful color) and it was good till the last 1/4 til the tail that did not shed. We wet some paper towels and held it a little tight and let the lav crawl through the fingers it got most of it now its just down to the end. I just wonder if anyone has any better ideas on dealing with this. He was fine but I dont want to stress him out much more. So if there is an easier method let me know. i have adjusted the humidity by adding some plastic to top of the cage for next time. I think it is half humidty half stres? but anyone ideas would be helpful thanks.

Put the baby in a deli dish with a little water in it, enough for it to 'swim' in but plenty of room between the lid and water for its head to be out of the water to breath. Make sure the water is tepid, not overly warm and not cold. Let the snake soak for a little while, then try a dry rough clothe to gently rub the shed off. You will have to make sure the shed is removed soon as it will dry on and be very difficult to get off and that could cause the next shed to stay on that part of the tail, etc. etc. and then that part of the tail will eventually die and fall off.
You can help your corn next time it is in shed by adding a platic container (butter dish or whatever)with its cover on and a hole cut in it for entry and exit and putting a damp paper towel in it. This provides an excellent humid hide and you will be surprised how much they enjoy this when in shed. Just check the paper towel occassionally to make sure it stays damp. You can also use damp spunghum moss, they really like that.
Good luck!

I had the same problem with my anery a week ago. My solution which worked was to soak a cotton ball with warm water, and squeeze enough water off of it so it doesn't drip all over you just holding it and stroke the snakes tail downwards towards the tip with it(where the shed still is) after several strokes, it came right off on the cotton ball. I had Popcorn on my lap with his tail against my pant leg to brace it as I used the wet cotton ball.

Then I started running my humidifier downstairs where I keep my lizards in hopes I can raise the humidity in my house enough to prevent that from happening again. (Well the anoles and frogs love the extra humidity)

Good luck.

Wow! Thank you the cotton ball method worked and alot easier than my papertowel method all the sheds off and with little upsetting him. This was only his second shed of his life. Now we can rest easy.

Great, glad it worked for you too. I know I wasn't looking forward to soaking all him again just to get the very tip of his tail to shed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of corn snakes. Watch out, you'll get addicted. I did. I have two already with two more coming soon.

Yeah corns are addictive we are already getting ready to purchase a rack system for the soon to be new additions. We have decided to stick with only corns from now on. We will try our hand at breeding in due time as well. We still love our others though still. LOL
