as you can plainly see this snake is a charcoal looking color, everyone tells me that i have talked to that no such color exists on a rainbow, i am goiing crazy trying to find a snake with this color

That picture looks to me like an Epicrates cenchria assisi that i have seen in books, but is not sure. I saw about 3 months ago someone selling some assisi in $850 each, but i really nit remember his name, good luck finding one of those rainbows

So are you saying this is not a rainbow or what? It has all the same markings as any other rainbow just a different color

albinoman Oct 29, 2003 09:01 PM

Yes it is a rainbow, but that is the problem with comun names, There are Colombian (Epicrates cenchria maurus ), Brazilian (Epicrates cenchria cenchria ) , Guyanan (Epicrates cenchria ssp ), Argentine(Epicrates cenchria alvarezis ) all rainbows. The one in the picture may be a Colombian rainbow ( Epicrates cenchria maurus) or an Epicrates cenchria assisi this subspecies come from northeastern Brazil, very different in color than the one we called Brazilian Rainbow. I wish could have a better English to explain it better, Jeff Clark could explain it better than me

It is hard to tell what this rainbow is from the pictures.
Do you own it?
It could be just a very dark E. c. maurus but I have to agree with albinoman in that it also looks like an assisi. The white stripe along the neck is present in a few of the seldom seen subspecies.

Mccraney,
. I have a pair of Campina Grande Rainbows, Epicrates cencria assisi that are marked like that snake but they are a dark chocolate brown color rather than the charcoal looking color of the snake in the picture. I wonder if the picture accurately portrays the actual color of the snake. The only Rainbow Boa that comes close to that dark charcoal color is the dark colored phase of the Argentinian Ranbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria alvarezi. Most alvarezi are colored grey to tan to light brown but a few are very dark like that. I have a PIC on my website of one of the dark phase Argentinian Rainbows.
