If you must get a big snake, I would reccomend the red tailed boa. As burms get GIGANTIC, and the boa's are more commonly not quite as gigantic (although I have seen some monsters out there, they are nothing compared to a burm).

I believe a boa would be a good "starter" big snake. Make sure if you get one, that it's a tame one. There is a big variety in boa temperment. I have a total sweetheart, she loves people loves curling up in hair She's by no means a giant, but she's sweet. She was my first "large" snake.

So I say go with a Red Tailed Boa.

You will get many different answers to this question, all based on opinion so I wouldnt look for the "answer" here.
A male burm is a good starter large python. A standard Boa is also a good choice. Of course Im partial seeing as I don't have any standard boas but do have two burms.

I would have to say Boa too I have owned many boas and they are great snakes. Now Burms make great pets but are you really ready for a snake that has the potential to get over 2o feet. If boas arn't your thing and you have the money you can a a dwaft retic. They are fine as logn as they are captive bread.

I am not going to say too much, because I would be a bit unfair comming from the point where I am a python fan and have no interst in boas and think Retics are a really BAD first big-un, but all I have to say is, whatever you get (I would get the burm, but it's up to you) get a CB (captive bred not captive born, make sure you know, people try to scam, I know first hand) and make sure you get a hatchling. I would not buy a 12'er for a first big-un LOL. GOOD LUCK!

Well,If you wanna get a large constrictor,it would be wise to have plenty of experience with them.Blood pythons are good big snakes, they dont get too long, but really fat, mine is pretty fatfor 6 months old.But other snakes i would consider are boas(red tails(my redtail is 5 foot and very sweet) or argentine(6-11 foot) is what i would prefer,or dwarf retics would be a great choice,if you have the room a yellow anaconda since they get about 10 foot sometimes 13,but can go from total sweetheart to aggressive in a second without warning unlike a burmese or boa.yellow anacondas are tempermental and shouldnt be held for to long at a time.Olive Pythons are also good choices,or mabye a coastal carpet python, white lipped pythons are good(get up to 9-10 foot but i think only the black ones get that big from what i have heard. But if you are ready for something that gets really big,i would get a burmese, preferably a male since they dont get quite as large as a female.Burmese pythons are usually docile and good natured, great feeders.Mine never gives me any problems at all and i love him to death,i just wish he wouldnt hide so much.but think before you get something to very big, although the adult size may not seem really large,IT IS!A boa constrictor of 8 foot would be about as strong as n 11 burmese python, because boas are stronger than pythons. But a red tail boa can get about 10 foot 50 pounds, and burms can get up to 25 foot and over 200 pounds, and bloods are small but fat, some can get up to 9 feet, but that isnt too common, its mostly malaysian females that do,and i have a sumatran blood and she is very sweet...until she is shedding, lol, well hope this helped ya out
