Question on Size

Ball-Pythons.Net Oct 29, 2003 04:40 AM

I've never really raised a female up from a hatchling, heck last year I got my first baby ever, which was male. I've only ever had two adult females, so I've never experienced rasing them, so I'm not sure what is normal.

So here I go. I got a female about the middle of August, and she was around 17-18 inches long, and not really that wide. She was supposed to have been born near the end of July, making her about 3 months old right now. She's becoming massive though. She started eating...then growing... So now here it is, October. She's 25-26 inches long, and as wide as a 50 cent piece. Would you all consider this above average size or growth? She's growing like mad. I have a Year old male that she's catching up to in no time. So for those of you who've raised females up, were they of this size? Am i jumping the gun hoping that she'll be a beast? Thanks

I have hatchlings from late June-Early July 03 that I feel were fed aggressively on my part and weigh in at 200-250g. The average hatch weight was 48-57g. That is roughly a 4x increase in weight in just four months. They can grow faster and they certainly can grow much slower. I have taken in juveniles that were over a year old and weighed less than my 6month olds. Length is not a real solid indicator, go by weight. If you want more details, I can provide you statistics of a female I hatched a couple of years ago where I did not feed aggressively (one meal every 10-14 days) to show you a minimal growth pattern.

Rich, I'm very interested in those statistics. I'm raising a female now too, who's growing very well, and like to compare her info with the info you've got. Would it be possible for you to mail them to me?

Thanks in advance.
