some general questions

dagangsta Oct 29, 2003 11:07 AM

ok, i have a coupla questions i'm about to get a bearded dragon sometime soon, i just got a tank, i don't know how big it is in terms of gallons, but i think its either a 40 or 55 the demensions are about 36" wide, 18" deep, 17" high, yea but i'm just wondering a coupla things first off i did not recieve a screen lid with it, only a like rabbit cage like thing that goes on top of the tank to double the height, a baby would be able to fit right through that top, i'm wondering if i can just keep things low, and not have a screen top or is it ok to put a ten gallon inside of the biug one (i have no more room for tanks anywhere else) another thing is do i really need a flourescent fixture that goes the whole length of the tank, and also how many hours a day would i hafta expose it to sunlight to keep from needing to buy a uv bulb? and also umm, well thats it for now i think but yea if i tink of anything else i'll just post up again thanks for your help

Sounds like you have a 40gallon breeder which I think actually is 44gallons. As long as you keep everything low you shouldn't have a problem with them getting out but I mean really low. They can and will jump, but some seem like they do it more. I would just play it safe and get a screen, plus you NEED to have a basking bulb so the screen provides a nice place for it to sit. As for the UVB requirements, I believe 30 minutes of unfiltered sun exposure is required daily. Setting the tank next to a window does not count since the glass filters out all UVB rays. You don't need to have the flourescents all the way across the tank, just make sure to have a bright enclosure. Beardies do better in bright lights. I also don't see what the problem with putting a 10 gallon inside the 40 till your little guy gets bigger, but you may want to use the 10 gallon as a cricket cage.

I would like to add, do not put your tank in front of a window to expose it to sunlight! It will heat up your tank tremendously and bake your bearded dragon!
