Cooler winter temps/ over wintering??

ReptileMatt Oct 29, 2003 11:08 AM

I was wondering if anyone out their over winters their gators? I have read/heard of people doing this. I overwinter many of my other herps and was wondering if this practice was really safe in regards to alligators? Let say take the temp down to about 65-70 for a few months. Any info would be great thanks!

My adults stay outside year-round. I'm in USDA zone 7, which means our average lowest winter temperature is in the single digits. I have a quonset shaped cover of clear greenhouse film over the pond and a small strip of land for basking. The clear plastic provides solar heating on clear days. I run a trickle of hot water into the pond constantly. The water doesn't freeze, and they have done well over the past few years (plus, some of my water hyacinths survive the winter, so I don't have to get new ones every year).
