Down to 3 eggs

ecb Oct 29, 2003 11:54 AM

When I went to check on the eggs I found that the Vermiculite had dried out a bit, and 8 of the 9 I had in a uncovered container were dimpled and dry
on is stil in a full round, and has only a little give to the sides, so I moved it over to the Superworm container (with the lid on it) and hope the remaining 3 grow out
I M kicking myself that I let them dry out and die
and it is only my OWN stupidity
Live and learn
and I hope Inever forget to check on them again

BTW Erowen is more active still
I think she is doing MUCh better, even her color looks good (and she is pale enough she might be going into shed)

Elizabeth, you are being a bit hard on yourself!

I have found that often these eggs will plump back up but sometimes it isn't just moisture. I had 8 eggs from my new blue girl from Florida. I had the perlite too moist, don't know for sure if that is what caused the problem, and some of the eggs looked moldy. I moved them to a little dryer mix in a fresh tub and treated the moldy eggs with anti-fungal stuff. My efforts were futile and 6 of the 8 quickly became yellow, moldy, slimy, and hard. I have 2 left and one looks like it may be turning too but the same one that has looked good from the start still looks good and feels nice.

All of these eggs candled pink so I don't think it was a matter of fertility and I don't think the moisture alone is the cause either. I have the ones from Jewel in two tubs. One is a bit to moist right now and I keep leaving it uncovered in hopes of letting it dry a bit. The eggs all still look nice and plump, in fact, they are rounder than what they started out already. They are nice and white and clean.

So, what is my point? I think you stated that the substrate where the eggs were laid was too wet. The eggs Jewel laid were in a nice moist, not wet, substrate. They are fine. The ones from my other gal were laid in a real soggy spot next to the water dish. They were slightly discolored and very dirty, except for the one that is still good.

I kind of wonder if the super wet conditions of the nest site are more to blame than the too wet incubation medium. Perhaps when they are laid in wet substrate where you have a good bacteria culture going the eggs become contaminated. I am sure that the bacteria count has to be higher in the small viv compared to a large forest.

So, I do hope that you get at least one or two babies but if you don't I don't think you can totally blame yourself. You have done the best you can with them and whether they make it or not is not totally up to you!

Good luck with the remaining eggs!

Thanks, my Eldest daughter gave me a similar Pep talk
"MOM, U have other more important things to focus on, like the 2 that are not dried out, and ME' blinking her blue eyes at me
She is a NUT, but a good nut
She is the one checking on the eggs when i forget to, she is being good and helpful
we shall see what comes of these eggs (although they are the ones I promised the school)
