Looking for a gecko species...

ericthemantis Oct 29, 2003 12:14 PM

I have an empty 39 gallon tall aqaurium that I want to fill, and am thinking of some kind of gecko species. Are all gecko's nocturnal? If not I would prefer a diurnal species. The species must be arboreal as well (no fat tails or leopards) and not super big, but not too small either. Any suggestions?

How about day geckos?

I'm in the same situation as you. Same tank (fishtank I'm guessing?), same requirement. However, just about all geckos aside from day geckos of that size are nocturnal. There are exceptions, however, they are rare and often impossible to obtain. I got nice book titled "Geckos: All species in one book" which has tons of small cool geckos. The problem is, most of these are impossible to obtain if you're in the US. Unless you get lucky, chances are you will get up with a day gecko of some sort. If you dont like those, a crested gecko would work well but is nocturnal.

That book sounds awesome! Where did you get it? Cresties are very neat, a little on the expensive side, but cool nonetheless. I'll continue looking into them as well. Thank you!

Hey, great idea. I can't believe I overlooked them. I couldn't think of anything that wasn't nocturnal. I'll look into those. About how much would one pay for a giant day gecko, and do they calm down eventually? Thanks for the idea!

From my personal experiences, they never really calm down. They have very sensitive skin too so its not a good handling gecko. However, I have heard cases where they will come lick baby food off your finger and wont really get scared when you open the cage, but not many where they are handleable. You can expect to pay around 50$ at a petshop, and around half that at a reptile show or breeder. The book can be found here: http://www.zoobooksales.com/ under the name of "GECKOS, ALL SPECIES IN ONE BOOK: PROFESSIONAL BREEDERS SERIES" by
Henkel, F.W. and W. Schmidt. Well worth the 40$ in my opinion. I also posted a list above that I'm personally looking for, if I dont get many answers, I may resort to scanning in pictures from the book so you might get a peek too.

I find crocodile geckos very cool they get 6 or 7 inches long, crested geckos are cool they get 10 inches, tokays but they can get like 14 inches, golden geckos get 10 inches, skunk geckos get 10 inches, palm geckos get 10 inches.
If u are interested in one of these geckos and want a care sheet just ask k.

apart from day geckos, there are also lygodactylus geckos. they're very simular to days and are diurnal. they're not colourful with bright greens, but some have nice markings.

Hi

You could try a day gecko. Look on Geckoranch for them

Hi

I went and checked out day geckos for you on Gecko Ranch and they run anywhere from $35 to $85 dollars. Click on phelsuma when you get there and then just scroll down and you will see prices for Giant ones as well as others.
