how do you feed your toads?

x1angelbabyx Oct 29, 2003 12:57 PM

hi all

as you know, i'm still new - so sorry for the mass load of questions!

most of my toads' diet will include wax worms, pill bugs, and recently shed meal worms. once in a while, i'll include a couple of pinhead crickets... but for the worms and the bugs - could i just plop them into a 3" diameter ciramic dish for them to eat from? or should i let them roam freely and be close to drowning or digging their way down the substrate? any advice?

thanks for your help everyone!!

I would actually switch the diet around and make the main part gutloaded crickets and mix it up with the occational mealworm, waxworm, pillbug. That way you don't end up with an over weight frog sinc the others are a little high in fat and more or a treat than a meal.

You should be able to just put the worms in a dish. I know I wouldn't want them digging down into the dirt and end up breeding in the tank or something.

I feed my FBTs their insects by hand. I feed them twice per week, and they are happy-healthy-and active. The majority of their diet consists of Lobster Cockroaches(N. cinerea), followed by treats of molted mealworms/waxworms/moths/and the rare tiny guppy. Feeding them by hand makes monitoring their diet easy, as I can tell who is getting the proper amounts of food each feeding session.
All of my frogs and toads are now eating from my fingers, so now I don't have to worry about the insects evading my pets' attention.

We usually let the food loose in the tank and let the toads find them. We never feed mealworms, though. I had lost several toads this way until I learned that mealworms and amphibians don't mix.

We also hand feed our toads. We have 3 Bufo Americanus (2 females and one male) and a tomato frog (male) and we just got a Rococo.

Attached is a picture of my two favorites; Kisco and Woodstock. Both eat from our hand.
