Can I get these species?

antonm Oct 29, 2003 03:41 PM

I was looking around this new book I got and saw a lot of cool geckos. The problem is, I dont know many breeders and local petshops have no idea what the hell I'm talking about when I mention these guys. Can somebody experienced point out what I can and can't get out of this list? Maybe a likelyhood of me finding each of these and possibly even a place to. Any input whatsoever is overall welcome. Thanks in advance.

Terentola n neglecta
Strophurus ciliaris ciliaris or intermedius
Gehyra Vorax
Rhoptropus brnardi or boultoni
Ptenopus garrulus maculatus or kochi
Homopholis fasciata (we had one at work but it was sold, no clue on how it got there in the first place)
Gonotodes albogularis fuscus
Diplodactylus taenicauda
Eurydactylodes vieillardi

Sometimes it helps if you know the common names of the geckos when you go into a pet store. Personally, I only really know the latin names of a few species off the top of my head.

Yeah I know this firsthand since I work at one. The problem is, I dont think there are even "common" names for the species I listed....Maybe in other petshops or other countries but none around here. I mean a golden gecko is a golden gecko anywhere but when you get into these obscure species the common names get blended together. Thanks for the tip though.....

you're going to have problems getting...
Tarentola n neglecta -
Rhoptropus brnardi or boultoni
Ptenopus garrulus maculatus or kochi
Gonotodes albogularis fuscus
Eurydactylodes vieillardi

Diplodactylus taenicauda and Strophurus ciliaris ciliaris or intermedius are obtainable, but are going to cost you.

Gehyra Vorax and Homopholis fasciata are pretty easily obtained, good intermediate geckos and are fun to work with. I know its exciting to start with rare species, but they're expensive and hard to come by...some are only obtainable via trading. Work with the latter two species can be quite rewarding as they are fun to watch, yet still breeding may be challenging.

I have a way to obtain the h. fasciata but I know of no breeders with Gehyra Vorax. I have heard they are not too hard to obtain though from other sources. Does anyone know any breeders or ways to obtain them? They look like fun geckos, kind of like a big crested from the pictures I saw.

Also, what about the Oedura species, the O. castelnaui or robusta for example? So many geckos.......so little time......

Ok about the vorax, they are kinda cool but they are not like having a big crested. These guys are not nice. lol, think Tokay rather than crestie. I have a male vorax and he is cool but mean.

Oh yeah I know that part haha sorry I was saying look wise. They kinda look similar. I have a tokay and its nice though so maybe you can tame one of those guys down if they're young....mind if I ask where you got yours? Are most captive bred or wild caught?

Actually, mine is a rescue of sorts. He origionally belonged to my roomie, who sold him (years ago). The guy, he sold him too, kept two males together and decided to give up his gecko collection to a guy I know that works in a pet store. The pet store guy, didn't want him, so he stopped by the house and dropped him off because he looked awful. He was really thin. He is now pretty darn fat, thanks to crix and babyfood.

Nice! Thats kind of like I got my tokay. I never knew they could have a fat tail up untill now Anyway if you ever come across any info on where I can get one let me know.
