Funny story--My Cham Tried Roaches Today (long)

SaveFerris Oct 29, 2003 03:57 PM

Ok I got a nice big box of 30 orange head roaches from Mulberry Farms. They had a nice mix of adults and nymphs but MOSTLY adults which is great.

So I grab 2 nymphs to give to my 6 inch Veiled cham (not including tail)

Well I wasnt paying much attention because ONE of the nymphs was too big for her! She got it in her mouth but it was a little too wide. For the next 20 minutes she was RUBBING the roach against the screen and doing a good job of ripping off its legs and breaking it up. I was amazed at how smart she was.

She tried the screen then she went up to her vine and rubbed it on that, then she took it up to her basking spot and lifted it up towards the light (???) THEN she went over and HELD IT UNDER THE DRIPPING WATER! She was trying everything to break it up so she could eat it.

In the end she got about half of it down and just dropped the rest. She was pretty tired trying to eat it. Then she went and got a drink to wash it down LOL The second nymph in her cup is smaller and ill be more careful to only give her the small ones.

Do you think she'll try to eat them again or will she give up? I hope i didnt give her a bad experience.

If she went through all that trouble but refused to drop it I doubt it was a bad experience for her. My chams will spit out something if they don't like it.

Well, she must of liked it because i came home and the smaller nymph is gone. I doubt it was as much a fight as the bigger one.

when I gave Luna her first roach she spit it out (too big). Two days later I tried one a little smaller and she happily takes them. I only have one adult left (it's a glass climber so I don't want to breed) but have a jillion little ones - they grow too damn slow! I put a bunch of the little ones in a cup the other day to see if I could get her to use some up (LOL). Well, she finally took one and seemed surprised that there was (almost) nothing there - then she did the "heavy sigh" thing and looked at me like - come on!!!!!!!!!!!! haha!

I decided to put some med size superworms in her cup just in case she wanted to eat. she comes scampering over to it and after looking in it, she goes right back up to her vine.

WELL!

Our veiled, Frasier, just won't have anything to do with roaches, and here we are with colonies of hissing roaches and orange-headed roaches! Doesn't matter if they're day-old nymphs, first or second instar nymphs, etc., he just won't eat them. Only thing he really wants to eat are his crickets and his mealworms. Spoiled brat... LOL

Oh yeah, and he goes absolutely bananas when he sees silkies and hornworms. Mebbe I'll get him some for Christmas...

Julie, Justin and Frasier :-D
