Question

MyNameIsAl Oct 29, 2003 04:02 PM

I have a few questions pertaining to my frog. I have noticed the tail of one of my froglets is almost gone. So I was wondering what to feed it since it will soon need to eat. If i need to feed it something alive will it eat the food or is there somekind of "teaching" required? Thank you.

Depends on the species. Maybe I just missed what species it was. Sometimes it takes a while for them to eat, and they can last a while off of what they got from their tails. A couple of good starters are pinhead crickets and flightless fruit flies. Both are pretty readily available and make fairly good, cheap food sources. I think some people may use springtails as well, or "field plankton" that they catch, but I normallly just use fruits flies and pinheads. Andy

The species is Rana clamtins Melanota (Northern Green Frog)

Then what I said should apply. Good luck. Andy

I would wait until a few days after the froglet absorbs its tail. Then put it into a small tank (with a good lid) with some moist paper towels and a few pinhead crickets. Waiting for about a half-hour, the frog should begin to chase and catch a cricket or two. You might have to make yourself leave the frog alone for awhile to do this, because our presence can terrify them. It also helps to put a background on three sides of the tank, or even all 4 sides for added security. Once he goes out of the "I'm being stalked... run!" mode, he will be calm enough to go into "feeding" mode.
Then just remove any uneaten crix and try again the next day, until the frog catches on and eats. It might even take 2 weeks, but eventually he'll start chowing, provided he is healthy. Just don't let your tank dry out!
