Where does one get a male gecko

hireinnaa_Y Oct 29, 2003 06:45 PM

Hey all, I'm new to this board
I am fairly new to leapord geckos, but my older brother got me one for my birthday, cause the pet store didn't have any savanahs. I have had a few before, (geckos), but I was reading on some sight and they said that most of the ones that are sold in the pet shops are females. I could understand why a pet store would want to keep just the females, which would make me think that there maybe arn't a lot of people who hatch males. Which leads me to the question, where does one get a male gecko? Mine's still just small cuase I only got it awhile ago, but I want to hatch some in the future. Is there a way that you can tell when they are that little? or are there places where you can get male geckos?
This is all asuming that mine is a female, which may proove to be a little foolish, but anyway.

Male Leos are not hard to find. Females are produced more because they can be housed together but there isnt a shortage of males. Sexing them will depend on size and age. Its usually around 6 months old to sex them but they all grow at different rates and I've sexed mine between 2 and 3 months old, but there very well taken care of from the start. Once yours is sexed you might look into aquiring one from a breeder if you plan on breeding. Good luck with your new one.

You probably won't find a male leo at a petstore, but they are not hard to find if you get from a breeder. Most breeder produce some males, some, like me have their incubator temps get a bit too warm and end up with more than they wanted/expected! You can buy temp-sexed males but this is not always accurate. They need to be a bit older before you can sex them visually, usually around 2-3 months. You can try to find a breeder near you, go to a show, or buy one from a breeder anywhere in the U.S. and have them shipped. If one breeder you look at is out, keep looking, you will find what you are looking for.

Probably best for you to make sure your gecko is a female before getting a male, and make sure you really want to breed them before getting a male. There is no rush. And you should not house sexually immature females with a male anyway, they may try to mate with her before she is old enough and that could hurt her or even kill her.
