Sad day in Lake County, Illinois

Carmichael Oct 29, 2003 06:48 PM

It looks like the IL department of health is ready to push an ordinance in through the back door to ban specific species of reptiles in Lake County (the fastest growing county in the U.S.): burms, anacondas, rocks, retics, all species of crocodilians, croc monitors, water monitors, even scrub pythons were being considered. The prospects are very good that this is passing which means that 100's if not 1000's of large reptile owners are going to be forced to give up their beloved pets. Just to set the record straight, I was NOT in favor of this ordinance even though I can understand why it is being rushed through. Now, there are some provisions to protect licensed exhibitors and such, however, for the average "Joe" reptile keeper who keeps his large reptiles in a responsible manner, you either need to find a new home for your animal or move out of the county. Looks like our wildlife center is going to be FLOODED with calls. Anyone interested in helping us take some of these soon to be abandoned animals?

That is a har dthing to do deal with, I'd imagine. If it were me, being so young, I'd end up moving rather then giving up my snakes.

If you have ANY balls please let me know, I am also interested in burms and retics. I would love to have a crocodile, but I don't have the proper housing for one, and I'd rather have the animal in a suiteable home than me take it and wait a month or so until it's built.

Good luck with this, and I'm still waiting on pics!!

Joel

I would stand my ground if someone tried to take my herps. They need to ban other things not reptiles. But i will not go into that.

I have sent you a couple e-mails Rob wondering if you have any snakes up for adoption. I am interested in burms, retics, boas, and ball pythons. Just send me a list of what you get in. If you decide to let Joels417 get anything let me know. We live about 20 mins apart. Then that would save on shipping and you haveing to make extra trips. I can vouch for Joels417. His reptile room is spot less. His animals are very well fed. And he has some very nice tan cages. LOL

My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend, I Sure Do Miss HIM!!!

RobertPreston Oct 30, 2003 10:40 AM

I'm very interested. I need a larger female Burmese for presentations in schools, to community groups, etc. For the last three years, I've kept two big Burms specifically for this use. However, I tragically lost my huge albino female last week, and I need a replacement for her. I only have a male Burm right now. He's 11 feet, 60 pounds, and he does very well in shows (did two this morning and have one this afternoon). But I need two in the rotation in case one is shedding, etc. Color isn't an issue -- normal, albino, whatever. I would like a female, however. Let me know if you have anything or have something coming in any time soon. Also, I'm in Georgia, and I don't know about shipping. If you can help, shoot me an email at rnhpreston@charter.net.

I really cant believe that they didnt grandfather in current owners and require them to get permits. How does a law pass through the backdoor anyway???? Can you explain?

Raven01 Nov 03, 2003 08:28 AM

Sometimes one proposition is tagged onto a completely unrelated law coming before the governing body, especially on a proposed law that is expected to be passed. By passing the primary law, the tag-a-long gets passed as well. Sometimes those in power require the addendum be dropped off before passing the primary law, other times they just pass it as it stands.
