Res has worms please help

smerek15 Oct 29, 2003 07:09 PM

I have had my turtles for about 4 months now and their are small worms that are swimming in their tank. I went to a pet store and they gave me worm medicine for dogs which seemed to work but then the worms came back. I also tried boiling all the things my turtles tank which also did not work. PLease if anybody has suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Why are you worming a turtle with dog medication from a Pet store?

First of all -- Are you sure these worms are coming out of your turtle. They could be any of a number of non parasitic creatures that are in your water, filter on the turtle itself but NOT necessarily a harmful parasite that is IN the turtle.

Never Never medicate an animal until you identify what it is you are medicating. You need to get a stool sample and have a vet check him for parasites, identify the parasites -- if he even has any and give the appropriate medication to get rid of them.

The best thing you can do is to get a stool sample and collect some of these worms and take them to the vet to examine.

Good luck
Steve

Are the worm white and about 1/4" to 1/2" long?

If they are tiny white worms that you can only see when really looking, its most likely just a maggot, and some rosey reds, they eat them, but your turtles will eat the roseys. Also clean out your tank completely, maggots are sign of dead, decaying matter at the bottom of your tank.

Yes the worms are that long and are white.
