I read that Pine snake are Diurnal, how about Rat Snakes??

peterfromme Oct 29, 2003 09:32 PM

Hi,

I've been debating between a leucistic pine or a rat snake. I read that pine snakes tend to be diurnal, which I'm assuming they tend to be more active relative to rat snakes? Is that a fair assumption?

I have a corn snake and would like to expand my collection to include either a rat or pine snake.

Please let me know what you think...

Peter F.

I think it depends on the type of rat snake, you can get diurnal and nocturnal species.

Corns tend to be most active in the evening when the heat is going down and sleep (bask) most of the day.

Russians ( Elaphe Schrencki ) are active most of the day and sleep at night.

Koreans ( Elaphe Anomala ) are basically nocturnal. Mine comes out at around 9 PM and is usually still active at 1-2 AM

Americans ( Elaphe Obsoleta ) seem to be pretty much like corns although mine tend to be more active than corns are during the day, they are certainly more active in the evening than during the day.

Steve.
