QUESTiON ABOUT CRiCKETS

xocourtox Oct 29, 2003 11:48 PM

I was looking up things on the internet, & found crickets in a can.. Will leopards eat them since they aren't moving?? Or does it all depend on the gecko?? I wanted to check with some people before I try it =D THANKS!

Not all lizards will eat non-moving food sources. In fact, not many will, so it's difficult to train them to go after the dead ones. However, there's a way, and you'll have to buy a food dish that activates with a battery, and it animates the dead insects, so that they can look alive. I'm not sure where you can buy these, but the others in this forum would probably have the info.

i think it might depend on your leo - but most of them like foods that move. i tried the can o' crickets and the freeze dried flies - and my leo doesn't like em. he'll look at them and either (A) look somewhere else and walk away -or- (B) lick it and then walk away. but when i give him live foods, he freaks out and gets in his "ready to attack" position. it's actually fun to watch but yah, hope i helped some!

Save your money-I purchased them a year ago, and hated it. They are no longer fresh after you open the can. You have to refrigerate them afterwards. I do not like field crickets-although they are cooked, the legs look awfully spikey and sharp so I ended up cutting them off before feeding.

The crickets grow stale quickly even with refrigeration. And will grow mold in about 2 weeks even with refrigeration so you have to end up throwing them out.

Store bought is cheaper, and fresher. And cooking DOES remove some essential vitamins/minerals.

Most leos won't eat anything unless it moves.

True, they DO mold pretty quick. The guy that gave me my leo tossed in the can o' crickets and i tried giving my leo a couple.. he spat one out and just avoided them... he ate the live crix and the live mealies though. i kept the cap on the can, but didn't refrigerate - and two or three days later, i tried to feed it again, but none of the crix were falling out like it 1st did... so i stuck a fork in to scoop a couple out and they were all goo-ey and stuck together - it smelled terrible too! so i trashed em. you'll have better results with live foods. you can always go to a pet store or order online for larger amounts of feeders ((( dont 4get 2 gutload!! )))

Even refrigerated CAN O CRICKETS stinks the high heavens when you open the can. Refrigeration is essential though, cause the crickets will rot and possibly give food poisioning to the critters. And when you refrigerate you have to let the ones you plan to feed them thaw out to room temp, so it's more trouble than it's worth.

I do *NOT* recommend anyone getting can-o-anything. It's expensive, and cooked robs vitamins, and fresh is best.
