A Question....

joshG Oct 30, 2003 01:07 AM

I am setting up a FBT terrarium abd I was wondering how deep the substrate should be for the plants? I was thinking of using the Atlantic bionical garden mix. Also....do would it be safe for there to be a catfish in the water section to keep it clean with the toxin the frogs produce? Thanks in Advance.

You'll want the substrate to be about 4 inches to provide stability for the plants. Bed-A-Beast (or any cocoa fiber) is also really great for plants. You may want to skip the catfish. FBs are pretty eager eaters and they may make the fish a meal. You're better off with a filter system and a partial water change once or twice a week depending on how many toads you'll be keeping and the size of the water section in the tank.

You can also put Potho clippings directly in the water. They will root and grow like mad adding a very natural look to your tank as well as help filter the water. Not to mention they offer great hidding spots under the leaves for the toads!

Catfish will eat leftover food, but they don't clean up toxins. They just convert food INTO toxins. And most of the tiny ones have spines.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Bot to mention, the toxins from the FBs could possibly harm the fish.
