Orion's First Night & Morning

lizard-lady Oct 30, 2003 07:42 AM

Good Morning. Between 8:30pm-9:00pm last night I shut down Orion's lights. This morning I discovered he didn't sleep in his rock cave(which was about 90degrees). He slept under the track of the glass door. Where he slept it was about 80degrees. Is this all right? Should I put him in his cave before I shut the lights down for the night? He wasn't moving so I got concerned and touch him. He jumped up and ran across the cage. I know I startled him. But he was very cold and he just sat there. Does it take a while for them to heat up and to start moving?

The basking bulb heats up alot faster now; it's at 110degrees. Should I try to get it a little warmer in case the thermometer is a little off?

The humidity is at moderate. What can I do to lower it to desert?

Hi Barbara

I'm new too uros but I'm sure 80 degrees is fine for a night time temp
My uro takes much longer to wake up than my bearded dragon so I would say yes
they take a while to wake up . One of the books I have says uros come out mid morning
to find food so maybe this is why that take awhile to wake up ?? ( someone else will know I'm sure ?!?!?!)

As for the humidity I'm not sure , have you a water bowl in with him ? This can rase humidity ?

Sorry for NOT being to much help , but I'm still learning too .

if you do not have it already i would get a timer, it will be wayy easier to keep the lights on the way you want them, 80 is fine for a night temp and let him discover his cage for himself. My new rescue baby didnt go into his hides for 2 days he just sat there ate and went bck to the same spot, not he is in his hide at night. it also does take them awhile to become active. Let the temperatures rise on their own you dont want it to go from like 80 - 100 in 2 minutes, it should take about 1-2 hours, like outside in the desert. I had a vision before and i used a 150 basking bulb which heated it up almost perfect.
Good luck any more questions feel free. Also do not worry about the humidity, it should be fine.

Hi lauren. I tried a 150 watt basking bulb and the temp went up to 125degrees. I was afraid of burning him. I have a regular 125watt flood light bulb now and it's about 118-120degrees.

Actually, 125 is probably just fine as long as the cooler end of the cage is still in the 80s. Some like it hot! He just won't stand wherever it's too hot, as long as he can still cool down.

Hi Sara. Thank you for responding to my post. I was worried about the temp. I don't have a water bowl in with Orion,I read they get their water from their food.

Hi,
Uros should be kept between 70-80F for night temps, nothing lower than 65F. If the temperatures are too high at night the uro will develop thyroid problems. 90F is a bit too high, since this is how warm it should be during the day on the cool end. Desert regions get pretty cool at night. It will take awhile for a uro to "wake up" and start moving. Draco is always pretty slow, and cold, in the morning, until he basks himself. I have never had a problem with humidity in the cage. If you have it hot enough there should be little humidity. I use a zoomed 150W "floodlight" for the basking area, and it works fine. I also use millet seed for substrate which keeps it dry. Hope this helps

Hi Sarah. Thank you for responding to my post. I was feeling nervous about the temp, I feel a whole lot better now. I just wish Orion slept in his cave. I guess he feels comfortable enough not to use it.

Sounds like he's just getting adjusted to his new home. Great name--my red phase Saharan male (a supersweetie!) is named Orion. Hoep you have as good of luck with your Orion as I've had with mine. (He's super spoiled--loves hibiscus and nasturtium flowers--you might want to try these if you have them)

I saw a red phase at the Hamburg show; they are neat looking. I wonder how we came up with the same name?
