Peat Moss...

hades-raptor May 29, 2003 08:14 PM

Im wanting to give my blood something to burrow in instead of just newspaper and hide boxes.. I think she'd be way less stressed and high strung.

Is Peat Moss okay? I've heard lots of different types of moss is okay, just want to make sure this is. I have a ready supply of it for my plants, so if I could use it in her cage it would be super.

Thanks

It will work, as long as theres no plant-like chemicals in it. But like Sphagnum moss, it shoult be cut. I got some sphagnum moss that was in strands, making it kind of difficult to feel secure in. But you know what? My blood hates it anyway.

I have a little wooden hide box and a round wooden dish with sphagnum in it, all form fitting. But the snake hates it. It always crawls out of the hidebox when it thinks no ones looking, and burrows in the substrate (repti bark). I always disagreed with newspaper substrate. It looks pretty tacky to begin with, and I can't imagine it being to comfortable to crawl on. If I were you, Id get wooden substrate and use the moss. It might like both. Nice Black too, by the way. I always wondered what an aggressive blood would be like, since there so slow and calm. I also wonder what an aggressive pug would be like.

That's interesting that your blood would hate it. When I got my a sphagnum moss hidebox, he wouldn't come out of it. As for newspaper, my little guy seemed not able to move so well on it, I would agree with you there. Anyway, as stated, any moss should be fine as long as no chemicals are in it, even the stuff they sell at pet stores works well, though expensive.

Pretty snake. I tried aspen for awhile. My guy kept getting it jammed into his mouth from burrowing through it. I haven't tried peat moss or cypress, but after seeing all of that aspen in his mouth, I switched right back to newspaper, which is what he was on at Pro Exotics where I got him.

good lcuk
