D. leucomelas.... tinc. group or histrionicus group?

andersonii85 Oct 30, 2003 12:14 PM

I have seen these guys grouped with both when talking about all sorts of aspects of this species biology. I know their tadpoles are not egg feeders and their call is not similar to the histrionicus group, but they lack certain bones that auratus and other tinc. group members have. Plus, I heard that they can hybridize with auratus's. Anyone ever seen any pictures of this hybridization? I would like to. Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated.

Hey,
I read a paper a while back saying that they were in the tinc group based on genetic data...i can't remember the region they compared/length of sequence/ or basically anything important All i remember, is that when the results were in, they belonged to the tinctorius group...hope this helps. I will try to find the original ref. if I have time...
hope this helps!

I think they are technically said to be in the D. auratus group (of which D. tinctorius are a member). Calls aren't a great way of classifying animals. Just for example, some of the D. granuliferus populations Mark and I found have calls that are totally different from the "standard" locale.

Justin,
Haven't seen any pics of leuc x auratus but Tracy Hicks has some intereting photos of some other crosses on his site.

Justin,

Here's a photo I scanned from "Jewels of the Rainforest" by Jerry Walls. He places them in the tinctorius group although he mentions that they have traditional been placed in the Histrionicus group due to the lack of the omosternum.

Thanks all! Tom, I have that book and didn't even think to check in it. That is actually one of the more attractive hybrids that I have seen. I wonder if they are sterile like a mule or if they can continue to breed with other hybrids?
