still looking

soulskater Oct 30, 2003 12:47 PM

I'm still looking for captive bred savannahs in the uk but I have found "captive farmed". What does this mean exactly? Is it just another term for captive hatched?
Thanks.

its like mass production pretty much. so they are cb, but they are not given as much attention as a true breeder would give them bc they are simply mass bred. thats from what i understand, someone correct me if im wrong.

The term, farm raised, is based loosely on animals that are raised on farms(for reptiles). The problem is, with many species there are no farms. Some species are truely farm raised, like some iggies or beardeds. Yet others like Savs, are not. They are from eggs taken from wild females or nests. So really in some cases, there is nothing captive about them other then they may have pipped in a box.

What I find very odd is, how come so many of these captive hatched have wild parasites?? that one baffles me.

You are right that these animals may not get good care, as when they hatch, there are literally, tens of thousands of them. That indeed would be very hard to care for. F

Its their claim to captured females already gravid and kept until they lay, then either sold back into the pet industry as "long term captives" etc, or dumped along the road or sold to other natives for food, or sold for skins. The hatched babies are then sold really cheap (from an importer for $1-5 a piece in the US). It basically means WC babies instead of WC adults or subadults. If you want CBB then ask for proof, they are either WC or CBB.

Ive done some confronting on that one. I was like "so, where exactly is this "breeding farm" located? Can I see some pics of your "breeding" stock. They will either threaten me, or deny that they implied that they "breed", or say they dont know where the animals came from, and they only know what they were told when they bought them. Whatever they choose to answer this question with though, its not usually in a very polite manner. Dealers do NOT like to be asked quetions. All they care about is, "are you gonna buy anything??"

I wish I would have kept the responses from these dealers, probably about 70 of them who were selling so called CB savannahs or niles and they get very rude after you ask a simple question because they know they are wrong and its false advertising. Yes they get violent, threaten, insult, etc all because you ask "are these actually CB? Can you prove it?"

I think Ill look through the classifieds tonight and have a little questioning session.

Ill post my responces... It should be rather interesting conversation material.
