My blackthroat likes strawberries!

Ghost425 Oct 30, 2003 04:47 PM

Kang, my male blackthroat, has decided that he likes strawberries. I had him out of his cage, and there was a plate of strawberries next to my tegu's cage. he promptly marched up to them and ate them all. is it healthy to let him have fruit occasionally? i know that this isnt kosher, but...

There have been accounts of them eating fruit in the wild. Plantains I believe.
Its not going to do harm. Just dont make too much of a habit of doing the old "hhmmm, I wonder what my monitor is willing to eat game!". Im sure youve got more sense than that, but you would be surprised at what people do!

I do not believe that varanids have the gastral enzymes necessary to process plant matter. Although that may factor in most when talking of leafy things like spinach, chard and such. Most fruits are little more than sugar and water anyway.
I had a blackthroat try and eat an eraser once, so what what they WILL eat and what they SHOULD eat are often two different things.
It will not hurt him in moderation, but is not doing him any good either I suspect.
Try balut (embryonated chicken or duck eggs) or crayfish if you're looking for some variety to his diet.

Cheers
Jim
