FBT, WOW!

Convicts4Ever May 29, 2003 08:46 PM

I just looked in my FBT tank, and my male is in amplexus with one of my females! I have figured out that I have a male and two females. So hopefully, I'll have some eggs soon! Any suggestions for care of the eggs, tads, and toadlets? I just wanted to have them as pets, and didn't consider that they'd breed this soon. But I do feel lucky that this'd happen so soon after I got them and with no special help on my part. I feel so happy!

cool. i was wanting to get FBT eggs. but after seeing how prolific my fraternity of FBTs are i dont think so. i read on here a while back some one raised over 700 FBT from tads in his many years of keeping them. what would you do with that many Firebellys????

Well i have a male and a female FBT and they are always at it. They g at it so much that i named the male humper and the female thumper.. cuz he'll start humping and thumper kicks him right off lol. i have these things in my tank on my pothos in the wates and it is fluffy white looking stuff. does anyone know if they r eggs. or anywhere that i can find a pic of FBT eggs?

I found nearly 100 eggs attatched to the rocks in the water half of the tank this mornig! They're now in a spare tank, so hopefully they'll hatch in a few days.

I just recently got two FBTs and one is always calling ( sounds like a distant dog barking) and I actually caught the larger one tring to "get busy" with the smaller one. Now I have heard that in the heat of passion that males will jump on another male so I cannot really say my other is a female. So is there any difference between the male and female besides the nuptial pads on males? Say like color patterns on there underside or on there backs? I just got them a week ago from a manager, she ended up giving them to me after finding out her baby children could not handle them.

so anyways if any of you could help me out I would appreciate it deeply

Thanks

A male will when jumped on by another male will issue a release call. Basically like, "I'm Not a Woman, So Leave Me ALONE, Man!" Plus males are smaller and leaner built than the females. Hope this helps.

Yeah, the female fbts are kinda chunky.:P.

They hatched! Only a few eggs fungused, but there's a whole mess of tads all resting in the tank. I removed the debris from the tank, so all there is is tads in the tank. This is the first success I've had in breeding frogs or toads! I'm so happy!

Congrats! Now just keep the water clean. My tads would eat lots of algae, fishflakes, Anacharis, and washed lettus. Get ready to culture your own FF, aphids, springtails, flour moth larve too. I had more success rate, when I kept changing the water as you do for fish fry. They are voracious eaters, and very dirty! I'm the one who raised about 700 tads with no info on how. I sold most to local pet stores. By the way, you will have Yellow Bellied Toads-due to them being raised in captivity. They will not be red like mom and dads. And don't be suprised that they do this again and again in just a few months with more in each clutch. I'm happy for you!!
