LONG awaited pictures of my terrarium for those who needed them!

LeeFobes Oct 30, 2003 05:50 PM

I am 15 years old so i couldnt go out and buy the most elaborate terrarium for my newly aquired ball python in may. so i used a left over 29 gallon from my house that had some fish in it. I bought a screen top, used that for a while...then i realsied she had bad sheds. I put a towel over it and misted it throughly nad the humidity has never gotten below 65% ever since. I also have a 5 1/2" dome for ambient temp...what you dont see is the damp moss on the inside of the hide spot which you can see the price on the side (97Cents hahaha what a bargain!!). For the hid spot i drilled a hole in it about the size of the snake around, but 10cm more to ensure a good fit. enjoy! p.s. i will be uploading alot more pics later.

whats so special about your setup? your keeping it in an aquarium. big whup. i can't even see the water bowl so im assuming its too small also. no offence btw

LeeFobes Oct 30, 2003 07:50 PM

its a big deal to those who asked for them...big whup huh? follow my cage plans and you wont be asking why your snake has a bad shed from now on...and yes, there is a water bowl. Go to the cages terrariums photo gallery...more pics in there. no offense btw...

maiden_canada Oct 30, 2003 09:51 PM

my snake had a bad shed the week i got him, wasn't my fault my humidity has always been at 65, thats why I asked. and that was over a month ago ive learned alot since then :P. but i still dont understand why ur cage is so special? anyone can search bp care sheets and find a million that say the same thing. and also aquariums are no good for bp's.

mykee Oct 30, 2003 11:27 PM

Seems like a lot of work. Nice though, for an aquarium set-up.

A few of us who are new to the hobby asked for some pictures of people's setups last week.

Geeze........give the kid a break. He is obviously excited about his new ball python, and is trying to get some positive feed- back. What was the point of your post, other then to make him feel bad? Why don't you go play some hockey or something and check yourself?
I think the cage is very nice, but the towel to increase humidity should only be used it times of shed. Ventilation is good. You don't want him to get any respritory infections.

LeeFobes Oct 30, 2003 09:17 PM

around the dome light i have a 1 inch space around the outisde...im hoping it will be enough, no problems with it so far. I only mist during times of shed, and the moss hide is availble all the time. I only soak it during the pink stomach phase and that last about a month (the dampness of the moss).

maiden_canada Oct 30, 2003 09:53 PM

lol, i actually play hockey, and aquariums dont holy humidity well, understand how it all goes through the top? and if you put a towel over it you get no ventilation, thats why awuariums are no good. if he took the towel off his humidity would drop to about 40-50 with the mulch, if he leaves it on he gets no ventilation.

LeeFobes Oct 30, 2003 10:25 PM

yea, you know what...you have your own opinions on what is good for your snake. My snake is doing really well in this "no good" aquarium you talk of. And indeed i DO have adequate ventilation. if you would read my post and not get set on flame mode you would look intelligent. and p.s. i dont think those small plastic shoe boxes they keep baby ball pythons are any good..but i keep my mouth shut because i know alot of people like them. so you can like...stop being "ball python god". i dont care what you say. p.s.s. proof the cage works: she was 150 grams when i got her now she is 500-650 grams and doing well. pooping is all normal. id like to see your snake maiden, really i would.

maiden_canada Oct 30, 2003 10:36 PM

also what are you feeding your bp?

idealreptiles Oct 30, 2003 11:34 PM

Doesn't everybody?

mykee Oct 31, 2003 12:04 AM

Nope. I feed mine bald eagles.

idealreptiles Oct 31, 2003 02:08 PM

LOL. I am still looking for a good breeder. Those eagles are so damn expensive!

mykee Nov 01, 2003 01:39 AM

Surprisingly, they get harder and harder to find. Going to have to start raiding zoos soon...

idealreptiles Nov 01, 2003 06:03 PM

Let me know if you get a Condor....they are delicious!

mykee Oct 30, 2003 11:36 PM

Aquariums are nice for those of you who own one BP. They don't hold humidity well, they don't hold heat well, and there are just a hassle to clean. You can't get your husbandry right with them unless you modify it up the wazoo, which, in my opinion, is counter-productive because most people put their BP's in aquariums because they 'look nice' 'like furniture'. I'll be honest, I've never seen a piece of 'furniture' with bricks or workout weights, a towel or odds and ends of god-only-knows what else. However, if someone is willing to modify an aquarium to make it both an ideal enclosure for the ball, and a beautiful piece of 'furniture' they have quite a bit of work ahead of them. Good luck to them. I will stick with my ugly, yet both practical and ideal 'shoe box' rubbermaids in a rack.

let me see your snake pics canada. and im feeding her 110 gram small rats once a week to a week and a half depending on the actualy size of the rat. The aqurium suites my needs and the ball pythons needs, so why tell me not so? let me see your snake pics. canada....thats all i ask.

First, thank you for the advice and tips as to set-up of the aquarium. I'm just starting off (actually recieving my first bp as of this coming Wednesday....can't wait!) I've been involved with many different animals throughout my life, but never actually took that step and got involved with snakes. The more I learn and handle, the more fascinated I am. I'll have to post a pic once I get everything set up completely and see what comments/critisizm everyone can throw at me...gladly take all of it. But why the hostility here? I feel every thread I read has some form of serious egotistical shove behind it. I'd like to learn and ask but I hate hesitating to post because I feel I'm interrupting the usual chatters. Will my pics be unwelcome?
