matching sizes???

dawntodust1 Oct 30, 2003 08:33 PM

I have a 4 month old that is 10 inches long. I went to 6 different pet stores to find another one but I only found new born and almost adult. Do you really have to match the size in order to get a new beardie? Will they fight if there's a real size difference? Also I thought I had a girl but now I'm not sure. How the hell do you know for sure?

If you were planning to house them together, I would plan some time to keep them seperated at least in the beginning to give the new addition a sufficient quarantine period. Also I would be sure you have a girl, and get another girl. I would not plan on housing a pair together. Also........yes they should be approx. the same size. There are some different sites online that you can see pictures that would show differences in males and females but ..........looking at them from the rear..........holding up their tail slightly, and looking for either one bulge to the rear of their vent(female), or two bulges(male). Hard to explain, and its hard to tell on some dragons. Where are you located? Maybe someone here lives close to you and could take a look at the dragon to sex it? Chris

I live in Sierra Vista, AZ. At what age can you really tell the sex? She really looks like a girl but I'd hate to be mistaken.

It is important that they be very close to the same size. A larger dragon can make lunch of a smaller dragon, and they don't have to be little for them to do it. They should be within 1"-2" of eachother.
It's important also to figure out what sex you have before you get another. Only two females can live together w/o fighting. There have been exceptions, but very, very few. You will also need to quarantine a new beardie for 3 mo and 3 clean fecals to be sure it doesn't give parasites, or any other diseases that are being spread.

Here's a link with pic for sexing your dragon.

The Atomic Lizard Ranch is near Benson, AZ......I'm up in the Phoenix area......if you email them, they might know someone close to you that could help you sex them or you might be able to take the dragon to them as well.....if you were up here, I'd gladly do it for you.
