Hi, I have kept snakes for a long time and it is extremely obvious when two snakes are copulating. I have recently gotten hooked on leopard geckos and even though I have read up on them quite a bit, I can find no pictures or diagrams of what copulation looks like? Im sure it sounds weird, but I would like to be as familiar with all their behavoirs as possible. Like they say "if you know what is normal, you also know what is abnormal. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx, Dave

When they are introduced during mating season, the male typically will start biting the female or nipping her from around the tail area and working his way up until he's nipping at her neck. If he's put the right moves on and used the right pickup lines, he'll get into position where he rotates his tail under hers and they'll look like this picture. He'll let out one of his hemipenes, which enters her cloaca, and well, you get the rest. It's pretty violent and dramatic the first time you witness it; it's unmistakeable. Kinda reminds me of cats I saw once.

Man that was an awesome explanantion. I have paid good money for a couple books that didn't do half the job that post did. I'm extremely impressed with the free exchange of information in this business/hobby. Thank you, Dave

This is a page I put together a while back. I don't know that this will be of any help after seeing Rob's post, but I figure it couldn't hurt.

Great page! If a male is kept with a female, is it feasible to actually catch them in the process or will they likely do "it" at night while noone is around to observe? Thanks for the great info! Dave

I'm glad that the page helped you out =)

On to your question...

If the male is kept in with the female year around you will probably not see them copulating. More than likely they will do it in the middle of the night sometime.

On the other hand, if you keep your male seperate from the female, he will probably get right to it as soon as they are introduced. My male doesn't waste anytime when I introduce him to the ladies.

Sad when the leos get most of the action in the house. So hard for us human males when you're not put together with 3 or 4 females!
