Anyone Grow Tillandsias from Seed?

Homer1 Oct 30, 2003 09:01 PM

Hey, everyone! I know there is a lot of experience out there, so I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to grow Tillandsias from seed.

I have a T. ionatha (I believe it is the 'Druid' variety) that has bloomed once, and the seed pod burst to give me this nice big clump of tufty seed. I'm not sure they are fertile (I assume they should be), but I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to how to get them to germinate, and how long it takes to reach adult size.

Currently, this wild brom has decided to bloom again . . . this time even more dramatically. Let me know what you think.

I've grown T. ionatha from seed once. We spred the seeds over a screen which was suspended over a butter tub. We cut a hole in the lid and put the screen under that and snapped the lid on. Then we put the seeds down and sprayed them daily. With good lighting and regular watering they'll do ok. It's kind of a real pain though. If I were doing it now, I'd just put them on some cork in a tank and just keep at spraying them (but letting them dry out a bit).
Best,
Justin
