How many firebellies can I house together?

buffysmom Oct 30, 2003 09:59 PM

I have 4 CFB & 1 JFB in a 20 L, mostly aquatic environment. I have the opportunity to get one or more additional JFBs. Would more than 1 be too many? That would make 6-8 in there.

I have 6 in a 30 gallon tall, mostly aquatic. Mine are half/half aquatic and terristrial (preference), so they do well and are all very healthy.

Do you have a picture of the setup?

like 7 years ago wheni had firebellies i had about 4 housed in a 10gal tank. I thought that was a little too many though. 3 would have been better. I think there were 2 jap and 2 chinese ones. Never had any problems really. So about 6 in a 20 sounds ok if its setup well.

Here's my very first web-posted pic (I'm so proud! Let's hope it worked).

Well, it's pretty big, but it worked. You can't see it, but there's a lovely waterfall at the back left.

Nice setup. I've kept 7 JFB quite happily in a 20-long, but the water was deeper. If you do get any more, be sure to quarantine them, particularly if they are coming from a pet shop.

I think I might add a bit more water, but it really doesn't feel crowded now, I can often look in & have to really search for any of them. On of my CFBs is VERY small, anorexic & spends most of his time out of the water. (I've tried isolating that one in its own tank & feeding it constantly, but it didn't help. I finally figured if he's gonna die, he may as well spend his days w/ his buds. Since I put him back, he's spending more time in the water & seems more active. Maybe he realized what he was missing!)

I decided to only get one more JFB, making 6 newts total in the tank. I will be sure to quarenteen. About a month, right? I'm getting her from a guy in the Kingsnake classifieds.
