Question on Dewormer

armiyana Oct 31, 2003 12:05 AM

The two major types of dewormer I've seen used are Panacure/Safeguard or Pyran.

Is there any real differance in the two?
Is one harmful to leos and the other safe?

They both seem to cover the same range of parasites. =/

I've never used Pyran... but Panacur has always worked great.

So I guess I can't really compare and contrast the two for you, but I can say that Panacur is a life saver.

And as far as safety goes... I'm not sure that it is even possible to overdose a leopard on panacur. In "Understanding Reptile Parasites" it states that there has NEVER been a documented case of a death related to a panacur overdose. It also says that Panacur has been proven safe in mammals up to 5000x the normal dose.

Good luck.

Panacur is the gold standard for treating most kinds of worms in reptiles. Panacur is EXTREMELY safe.

I looked up Pyran in the book Understanding Reptile Parasites and Pyran is not mentioned either under recommended drugs or drugs available for treating reptiles that are not reccomended. Unless it is something new that is proven safe and more effective, the answer is Panacur is best.

The only other wormers mentioned in the book that are recommended for reptiles are Ivermectin (very toxic, only recommended when panacur doesn't work on the parasite, such as filarial nematodes and Pentastomids) and Droncit, used for Tapeworms and flukes.

A google search on Pyran doesn't turn up any kind of drug, and the name is copyrighted as a kind of glass. Perhaps you got the name wrong.

We use it to deworm puppies at the pet store I work at.
We also use Droncit... but use it only for our kittens.

Ivomec we use rarely...That stuff is terrible. But it works. We only use it if a puppy has some sort of skin problem like mites.

Here's a link to a supply store selling it. It's a legit wormer. Many of our breeders use Pyran, about an even number to the ones that use panacure. I'd assume it would be pretty safe if it's the alternative.

And it worked great for getting rid of my leo's hookworms.

The difference is that Pyrantel paralyzes the nematodes so they pass through and get pooped out. Panacur affects the metabolism of the worms so that they literally starve to death. Both are only effective against the adult worms.

I know that Pyrantel doesn't easily get absorbed into the leo's intestinal system, so it's very non-toxic. Basically the only risk either medication has is toxic shock syndrome from an overload of decomposing worms or too many dead worms piling up and causing a blockage.

Okay, so it is almost the same.

I was going through some records and figured my leos are over due for another worming. I figured if the two are interchangable for puppies it should be okay for leos.

I guess they'll get treated later this week =D

The taste! I haven't used Panacur yet, but my leo didn't like the taste of Pyrantel. I think it really grossed him out. He even dropped a mealworm that I tried to dab a bit of the medicine on.

Most of mine don't seem to mind the taste of Panacur in the least, and many will readily "lap" it up.

I can't say the same thing for Flagyl though, they really hate the taste of that stuff.

Good luck with your wormings.
