help on rainbow boa

narcie Oct 31, 2003 03:17 AM

Hi

Im thinking about buying 2 brazillian rainbow boa's i'd like to get some advice on breeding with them and what kind of tank i will be needing they will feel very comfortable in.
I'd like to know sizes of the tank in meters or feet.
I dont want the minimum need.
Any help is appreciated. Also i'd like to know if they are friendly animals or how bad a bite can be.

Greets,

narcie (narco@vulnerable.org)

My BRB is very friendly but I guess it can vary. They don't seem to be very active snakes and mine doesn't climb much. She's currently very happy in a 20 long but is only half grown. The most important thing about BRB's is keeping the humidity up, so that should be a main concern when you choose a cage.
Bites from adults are probably painful but they wouldn't put you in the hospital or anything. They have some long teeth though!

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

The temperment varies with the individual. I have had tame ones..and demonds! The bite can be memorable but not severe enough to matter unless it is a large individual. I keep mine on spagnum which seems to work well. Misting definitly helps as they like it moist. ten gallon aquarium is fine for babys. Have never bred them.

I've got a 1.5 yr old pair that I'm keeping seperated until they reach breeding size in a couple years. I can't really advise on the breeding yet. The female in the pair is a biter- she's always been extra twitchy but finally found her mark a couple nights ago while I was cleaning her cage. I was tired and just wanted to get the cage cleared out. The male is a little twitchy and might bite if provoked or hungry but otherwise pretty calm. I only handle them about once a week so they might get calmer if I handled them more often.
As far as caging- plastic tubs are really good for keeping in the humidity. I'm using a couple of large sterilite tubs with ventilation holes drilled in them and the humidity stays around 80-90%. I'm also using under tank heating pads on a thermostat with the water dishes over the heat source and a moist paper towel filled plastic tupperware style hide in each tub. They hide 85% of the time and only come out of the hides to drink or look for food when they're hungry.
They are nice snakes overall but they've got longer teeth than most colubrids, and will definitely leave a mark if they hit you.
If you feel you can provide the humidity they need (and that can be hard in a glass tank) and don't mind a snake that hides most of the time, they are gorgeous snakes.
