I've had my eastern, from Dean, for going on 3 seasons now. I've always heard comments about their "smell" But I don't consider my indigo any smellier than anything else I have, rats, kings... Now, the noise the indigo makes when expelling...you'd think some drunk was in the tank...
I agree with juang, no difference in smell to me to me. I've been using cypress mulch for all my colubrids, mainly for humidity. I recently went to newspaper with a rubbermaid hide box filled with cypress. All but my Cribos love it. They had 100% mulch with a log hide on cool end. I moved log to warm end, but they still like cool end outside box, YT is a burrower, under the box. Only a week, appetites still good. I like the idea of box with mulch, I got it in here, let you know how it works out long term.
I have known an Indigo breeder who used Ozone filtration to supplement his daily cage cleaning. It seemed to work well. As for Cypress, I havent found any noticeable difference in the smell useing it over any other bedding. I do think that Indigos smell more than other colubrids, with the exception being Pituophis, those things crank out the waste products
After ahwile you get used to it, or, like me, you end up cleaning ALL THE TIME cause you cant stand it. Conform or suffer. lol
Happy Halloween,
Fred
Even my wife, who is extremely sensitive to stink, says they don't smell that bad.
I've been worried I'm doing something wrong!
Maybe it's just our egos? "He think's his indigo's sh*t don' stink!"....
I actually own an ozone deodorizer and can attest to how effective they are. However, ozone is one of those things that is best used only when absolutely necesarry. Ozone is an extremely reactive substance that does the same thing to your lungs as it does to the odors...
The only thing I ever use my ozone deodorizer for these days is when we get a car that has developed odors from must, dog or spilled and spoiled milk. It seems to nuetralize those odors for months or even permanently. Something that powerful CANT be good to inhale all the time.
If the EPA messures it's presence in the air and considers it a pollutant, intentionally making more of it inside your home doesn't make sense.
If you get one of those ozonators, don't use it all the time and dont use it where you keep yourself or your pets without completely airing out the room after you use it. Like I tell folks who buy indigos from me, use that smell as your clue to clean the cage. The smell stops when the mess is gone.
