New Burm kinda motionless

cito Oct 31, 2003 06:01 AM

When i first got him, he roamed around his cage for the first 2 days. The guys at the petstore said he was a vicious snake and always bites. He hasnt tried once since i got him. But in the past two days, he has been sitting, curled up under the heat lamp all day and all night, not moving. I know he is alive becuase when i touch him he moves, but is it normal for baby burms to be this inactive?

The first step to figuring out the problem is knowing the temps...and humidity. Once we know that info we can go from there. Also has he eaten recently? Do you have a hide box? Multiple?

He does have a hide box, and a branch and a water dish. The temps high is around 85 and low around 70

Yeah, sounds like you dont have a hidebox. They love those things. In fact, they usually only come out of them at night time, and that's if they haven't eaten in a few days. They dont move much after they eat, especially if where they are curled up at has plenty of heat.

It sounds to me like his ambient temps may be too low and he is remaining in his hot spot to get adequately heated. What type of cage is he in? Try covering the vents a little bit at a time and watch your thermometer (placed away from the hot spot) until his ambient temps fall in the 86-90 range. Mist him several times a day too, humidity is a requirement.

Hi..As some of the others have said. A snake will tell you a lot about what they need, all you have to do it pay attention. If he sits on the hot side all the time, he is too cold. If he is on the cold side all the time,he is too hot. If he is in the water, he may want more humidity, dehydrated, has mites,is going to shed, etc, etc. Just watch him..

Also he could be sick. Snakes and other reptiles use heat to fight sickness, infections etc. Watch him close and keep us updated..

Good luck.
