Is my 2 year old leo too fat?

lml Oct 31, 2003 07:34 AM

Hello,

My 2 year old leo seem fat compared to the pictures of other leos on the web. Her diet is very steady, and she seems to be pretty healthy.

Before I take her to the web, I would like to get an informal second opinion. Here's a link to some of her picts:

Thanks.

She does look pretty big, almost swollen. What do you feed her?

For most of last year, she's been fed crickets. Recently I've changed her diet to superworms/kingworms (zophobas morio). I feed her 1-3 every other day. I used to feed her until she didn't want to eat any more.

Some geckos seem predisposed to get extra pork. Tail fat is fine, but I worry a bit when their tummies get that fat. She hasn't been with a male has she? What substrate is she on? You want to make sure she's not impacted or eggbound. It could just be pork, of course. I had one that was like that so I put her on a bit of diet, I just fed her a little less and over time she slimmed down a little. She's still zaftig, but a healthier (I think) level of fat.

No, she's never mated. She's on that calci-sand stuff. Are they unable to digest the calcium sand? I thought impaction only happens with regular sand that they can't digest?

Leos can and do get impacted on calci-sand. It is at minimum not fully digestible, some say it is not digestable at all. Of course that doesn't mean your gecko is impacted. If she is eating and pooping regularly she is not impacted.
