First Ackie eggs-soft and dented?

pgross8245 Oct 31, 2003 11:03 AM

My ackie laid her first few eggs yesterday and the shell is soft and dented. Can you experienced breeders suggest what the problem is so I can hopefully correct it? Thank you.

Diet, nesting, temps, etc. There are so many variables, it all comes down to good husbandry.
Are you sure they're bad?

I don't know if they are bad, I just don't know how they "should" look as I have never had any animal lay eggs. Thanks.

Your dirt looks good enough to eat! Would you mind driving me over a truckload??

Oh my, mine don't look like that at all. I was thinking about low calcium levels and just got an e-mail asking about her calcium intake. Other than dusting all of her food and feeding the crickets the fluker's high calcium cricket food I don't know how to get any more in her. Is there an injectible calcium that I could put a small amount in her pinky? Just a thought, thanks for sharing.

Be careful of internet advice.

I would start simple if I were you. Dented, yellowish eggs would be infertile, meaning the parents didn't get the job done. Funny shaped, or really dark, hard eggs were probably held to long due to bad nesting.
Diet seems to affect the number of eggs laid and the ability for the female to lay multiple clutches. I also think diet has an affect on the animals that hatch.
This is of course based on my experience.
I feed my ackies crickets dusted with a good supplement, Miner-all or Repcal/Herptivite mixed 50/50 (doesn't really matter which). I feed pinkies once a week or so.
The rest is basic monitor husbandry.

Please don't get caught up in all the mumbo jumbo, its really very simple.

Good Luck
