Humidity question

Rottenweiler9 Oct 31, 2003 12:41 PM

Hello everyone, I know you all must know how to raise the humidity in a cage, because your Anacondas need it. I have considered a yellow but a conda is a whole lotta snake. I do have a red tail boa a burm and a ball. My question is, I have two glass tanks and a vision cage. THe humidity is at 40%, I have a humidifier in the room, and keep the door shut to that room, I mist them twice a day and it goes up but when I get home it goes down. I have heard taping the back of the vision cage up but what about the others, also if I put moss in there woudld that help. Any info would be great. Thank you

` Open top cages are no good for holding humidity. I have a couple of 40s with sliding screen tops. I turn them on their side, and use the screen as the front door, sliding up to open. I seal all but the bottom 2 inches of the screen with clear plastic tarp. My larger plastic and wood cages are sealed at the top and side seams, with silicone ( which can't be done around critters, the curing process gives off toxic fumes ), and vented only at the floor level. I force vent them with small computer fans.
` Once you've got cages that hold humidity, creating it is easy. I use floor heat only, so it's easy to have a hot spot where I put a water container. With floor heat, and non-arboreal snakes, you don't have to worry so much about the air temperature. With 80 to 85 degree water, and air temperature in the 70s, there is plenty of evaporation. If the cage traps it, you've got all the humidity you need. I have enough humidity that I can fan force fresh air into the cages at 1/2 hour intervals, and still hold 75%, or more, if I want.
` Hey, Burmese Pythons get much larger than Yellow Anacondas.

Thank you for the advice. How big do yellows get, I was looking at getting a male, I saw they stay smaller, I guess I am also worried about the personality.
Thanks again

` In my experience, most of the beliefs about different species of Boids behavior is just dogma. People like to pass around knowledge, so they have something to say. Usually, it's crap. Snakes are all individuals. In any species there's going to be a range of behavior, depending mostly on the background of each individual, whether it's snakes, dogs or humans. A friend has an enormous African Rock Python. She gets a lot of handling, she is not aggressive at all, and Afrocks have a terrible reputation. It's mostly about how young you get them, and how you raise them.
` I have three male Yellow Anacondas. Two are under 8 feet, under 20 pounds. The third is a giant male, over nine feet, 30 pounds, at 4 years old. He may hit 10 feet, but his growth has slowed, since he matured. He is the most gentle reptile I've known.
` And, he loves to have his picture taken.

Thats really cool, you can see some individual melanphores below his mouth. I thought that was neat, sorry for the rant

My anaconda (green) is around 4ft and i have him in a 55gal aquarium. I dont care for aquariums really, but hes doing fine in it; he will, however, not be in an aquarium after he outgrows this one.

anyway....

I have a custom built lid for it since my original one broke, Its screen framed with wood trim. I wrapped the whole lid in plastic wrap to keep the humidity in. believe it or not, enough air gets in just from the rim, not to mention, I get a bit more because of my custom lid, it doesnt overlap the edges like a regular. This method works best if you use an undertank heater. I use a bulb, and cut out a space in the wrap, but thats only because my room is fairly dark, and I like to see him. It still works fairly well.
