Importance of Calcium in dart frogs...

Greenstar Oct 31, 2003 01:08 PM

I rarely, maybe once evey 2 months, feed with calcium/supplements dusted food and have never seen any bone structure effects. I the color seems to be a little faded but who knows. I have raised darts just fine happy and growing normal without ever having any calcium supplements, that are now 3 months old, and their parents reiceved calcium every 2 months and bred fine. Am I just benefitting from a varied diet that allows the darts to get there vitamins and minerals from inside their prey or is it just a ticking time bomb and I need to change my habits?? I would prefer if you used evidence and experience to support your ideas not just opinions.

Thanks for the help

I depends upon just how varied the diet is, as well the diet of the food items.

Aphids (fed on roses,) Spring tail (fed brewers yeast), Melagastor (fed on eds fly media) wild type ff from my compost pile (flying and about 3/16 of an inch), rice flour beetles larvae fed on fine flour, plus random small bugs I catch around the house, and gnats and small flies that hatch out inside the tanks. I think that isw about what they get could be more note that, the rice flour beetles and springtails are from Frog day of this year, Wild type ff and aphids are also seasonal. That is about what they get (note no termites)

With as varied a diet as they are getting, supplementation may not be absolutely necessary. I would, however, be a little worried about some of the food items being seasonal, as the frogs may become deficient in some minerals during those dormant times. In my opinion, I would at least supplement every other feeding, but that's just me
