Irian Jaya Adult Size

ErinP Oct 31, 2003 03:42 PM

Hello,

I was wondering the adult size of your Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota variegata). I have seen their lengths listed from four to six feet, but was wondering if they are generally closer to six. How is there size and length compared to adult Jungle Carpet Pythons. I have four adult jungle carpets ( a snake also generally referred to as between four and six feet) and it seems that mine are generally closer to the six foot range. So for you owners of Irian Jayas and JCPs would you say that your Irian Jayas were smaller than your JCPs, or pretty similar in size and length.

Thanks in advance for your replies

I don't have any IJs, but my experience has been that they're slightly smaller than jungles. If the average adult jungle is 6', then I'd say that the average IJ is about 5'.

My 3 year old Irian Jaya male is a little bit over 6ft in length. He is not a huge bodied snake, so you don't think of him as being that long. 6ft in an IJ just isn't the same as 6ft in a burm or retic.

Now I just need him a girl friend.

most information that I had read has said that males will grow to sizes of 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet, and females a little bigger, maybe by only 1/2 a foot or so.

I havent seen anything that indicates jungles only get 4 feet though. 6-8 seems to be the size range I keep hearing when talking to people who keep them.

Yea,

I should have probably said five to eight feet for the jungles. Because as you stated that is probably what most are. I do have one four year old female that is just at four feet and doesn't look like she is going to get alot bigger, but she may as she is quite the little eater. I have seem JCP's listed at four feet on some websites like www.pythons.net in their size chart under the heading Morelia Spilotes sp. But as you stated I haven't seen many that size in the collections I've seen, but I guess their could be some. Anyway, thanks for your input and I guess whatever size they are as adults they still make a great addition to one's collection.

Thanks,
Erin

Thanks,

I thought that some might be bigger than I had heard. A pair of Irian Jayas will be my next purchase, I am really looking forward to getting a pair. Also, I wanted to mention what a great website and collection you have. Again, thanks for your input and good luck with everything you have going.

Thanks Again,
Erin

Thanks for the kind words, you will love the irian jaya carpets, they are usually quite calm and are fantastic animals to work with.
