stringy white stuff

sookie Oct 31, 2003 03:43 PM

Each morning for the past five I've noticed white stringy stuff hanging off my turtle's face, around her mouth. It's not skin that's being shed. At the same time she seems to have little appetite and possibly unrelated, is shedding her scutes. Any ideas? Is this normal?

If not shed skin then maybe fungus? Decreased appetite is not a good sign. If you have a mature female (whether she's been exposed to a male or not) they can go off feed if needing to lay eggs. Does she have access to dirt? If gravid females don't have acess to dirt, they can become egg bound and become very sick or die from infection. Forced to lay eggs in water is stressful to them. Some won't do it. Solve the dirt problem by putting her into a tub of 6-8 inch deep dirt once a week. If fungus, double check your housing and housekeeping. Getting her checked by a qualified turtle vet would be a good idea. Don't wait until feeding completely stops or things could get serious.
