Hi, I just bought a baby northern red belly but for some reason I think it might be a western painted, is there any way to tell the difference? Can someone show me pictures of the two as hatchlings?

See if your library has the Petterson Field Guides to Reptiles of the US (you'll need both the Western US and Eastern US editions). Those have both adult and hatchling pictures of all US turtle species.

Also try the website for the World Chelonian Trust - they have a photo gallery that includes hatchlings for many turtles. I don't know about western painteds, but eastern painted hatchlings are black. The redbelly hatchlings are green, pretty similar at a glance to hatchling red-eared sliders.
