I have been breeding rats for 2 years now and just retired my original female. Rats are able to breed at 45 days old, but from my experience their first litter is only like 6 to 8 babies. After that you are looking at litters from 9 to 15 babies at a time for each female. I don't breed my 7 females until after their litters are 45 days or older because otherwise I would have way to many rats for my 1 boa and 2 balls. Also keep in mind that at 40 days old you should split up the male and female babies or you could have a real population problem, I found out the hard way!!
