A baird of another color . . .>

Bairds sure come in assorted colors. They almost all look the same as hatchlings and then they amaze you.

Nice Bairds Terry! Bairds are one of the few widely available Rat Snakes that I haven't worked with yet, but I've sure seen some pretty ones - yours included. Maybe some day - just haven't caught that bug yet!

Thanks for the comment David. I know what you mean about catching the "bug". I really like bairds more the more I work with them. Maybe I'll have to shoot you some pics of the offspring and parents this coming season. LOL. Then, you can want them like I want the neon capes you produce. HeHe. I really drooled over the pair of capes that Gregg Feister got from you this past season. Not a rat snake, but here's a pic of my Steve Weissman produced cape gopher. I really want to add your neon bloodline to my collection.

I got from Steve. I'm hoping to get a pair of capes this coming season from Dave. His neon capes are really pretty.

SAAAWEEEEEEET.......Dang Terry.....you've been sandbagging us, as I did not see that snake on your website the last time I looked. Looks like my phone call the other day got your ass motivated with that camera......lol. All kidding aside, I really like the ground color on this one. Is that a Texas locale or one of the Mexicans? How old was that animal when you took that shot? I just came back from the herp show in Tampa with two female Bairdi hatchlings from two different breeders. I tried picking out a couple with slightly different looks. One has a dark belly, the other a lighter belly with a somewhat lighter ground color as well. Who knows how they will turn out, but at 15 bucks each, I rolled the bones once again. It seems criminal you can buy these hatchlings so cheaply, as they have the potential for being among the most beautiful of the rat snakes in my opinion.

Hi Steve -
I was just looking for your email. In fact, I was about to send you an email through a post of yours I just saw on the pit forum. Your phone call did light a flame under me towards my bairds. I took the pic of her 3 days ago. She is three this coming season. She could possibly have been bred this year, but I wait for my snakes to reach three seasons even if they are big enough. Like the case with your bairdi, she's the only one with that color I have. She is a Texas baird coming from parents collected on hwy 277 in Val Verde Co. I'm not sure how specific and correct that locality is, but it did come from the eastern part of their range. I wanted another one this year from the same parents, but the female had passed away last year and the male was sold at a show and no records.
I was actually taking pics based on our telephone conversation. I couldn't find a baird in my collection that had the chartreuse color of the one you posted. I have a couple with the color like the other one I posted. They have the yellowish colors, but not that green color like you are looking for or we discussed.
It's great being the buyer of baby bairds because you have just a good chance as getting the pick of the clutch as the breeder. You can't be sure which ones in a clutch will turn out to look the nices or what you want. The only way is to find and buy a 2-3 year old.
I've taken some pics I am planning to email you. Here's a pic of another one of my bairds. He's in heavy blue eye and is rather dull right now, but he has alot of orange/red for a Texas baird.

I wish I had a pair that consistently produced babies that turned out like her. Good Luck.

Remember when I was asking about unstriped bairds?
That one is close.

I think you were looking for a gray unstriped snake if I remember correctly. I've seen some silver/gray with very faint stripes that I thought were closer to what you were looking for. I haven't seen one with no stripes yet. I don't know what will kick out when the snake in the pic produces, but let's see and I'll most certainly keep you posted and you can get a pair if you'd like. I'm not sure yet if some of the screamers that people have posted can be selective bred for that color or pattern/stripe. I think you can get it down to breeding to gear towards a color/shade or pattern/stripe and that generally you may produce offspring that may lean that way. But I don't know if you can keep holding back until you get parents that consisitently produce a characteristic that isn't a gene trait. Unfortunately with bairds, you won't know when they hatch how they will turn out as adults. You would have to keep holding back everything you produce and breed several combinations to even start getting trend vs morph gene data. The Adam Block founding male that we've seen pics posted several times is a great looking orange baird. I have a trio of offspring myself. I haven't seen any offspring that anyone has gotten where their baird approaches that color of that male. Now, I'm so curious that I'm going to lend one of my females from that trio to the person who has that founding male in his possesion and back breed the female to him. I'm taking the female with the most orange on her and she will be bred back to the founding male. I don't know right now if it will prove anything, but maybe something will hatch that will.

Ain't it a wierd coincidence that there's absolutely no way to tell for YEARS what the snake will look like?
Mine are approaching 3 years of age, and I still look on in amazement everytime I bring them out. Always changing.
I've heard it takes them at least 5 years to get their adult coloration, and that they will continue to change slightly thereafter, as well.
Boy, talk about long-term projects.
Mine are looking pretty sharp lately, too. I love the long, angular heads. The head coloration on my male is totally different from my female, as well. Really cool stuff.

Thanks for the comment Brian. I'm going to post a pic of my Kentucky black rat snake that I got from Dwight Good shortly. The pair looks almost as great as your male. I see you've picked up a couple more snakes. Looks like you're getting a very nice collection there. Here's the Adam Block female I'd like to breed back to his founding male.
