New enclosure

gila7150 Oct 31, 2003 10:25 PM

Here's a pic of the new enclosure I built for my red tegus. It houses 1.1 adults and is approximatly 16' wide by 6' deep. It's kind of empty right now but I plan to add some rocks and large branches for climbing. I buried part of the vinyl fencing and poured concrete below the fence to prevent them from digging out. You can see one of their burrows on the right...I'm working on constructing a second burrow for them.
They seem happy with it so far.

Sweet!!! Just curious is this a year round enclosure? If so where is it that you live?

Thanks. I live in FL so they will be ok for most of the year. I'll bring them indoors for a couple months during the coldest part of the year. They've dug a pretty neat burrow already. It's pretty fun to watch their behavior in this kind of setup but they definitely seem to spend alot of time underground now that it's getting a little cooler.
It's kinda funny, they've lived together since they were hatchlings and have always gotten along great but the male definitely had to establish his dominance again in the new enclosure. He chased her around for a couple hours and did a lot of head bobbing. They've both settled in nicely now though and are sharing a burrow.

if you dont want to bring them in, I give them a sheet of plywood to dig under with a heating pad under it. they seem to thermoregulate fine even when it gets down in the 40's. I am in Miami Fl. and I keep all my tegus outside year round.

BTW, you must have some very happy tegus in that setup. You might want to give them some big pipes to play in.

Hi Chris, that enclosure is gorgeous! Very nice landscaping work, and I bet your tegus love it!
