Speaking of crickets...

trinacliff Oct 31, 2003 10:26 PM

I am having the most difficult time keeping my 1/8" crickets from escaping. I ordered 500 of them, and they are divided in half and being kept in the small kritter keepers...they were escaping before, so I put packing tape over the air vents...left a few small ones on top thinking there is no way they'll get out. Well, TONS are getting out. I keep the kritter keepers in a wood drawer like box...just a convenient place for them to sit in the garage...and I see them all over in there.

How on earth do you keep these rascals from escaping???

Are they getting out of the cage maybe?, does yur cricket keeper, have those tubes? they could be getting out that way, How many did you say are in these keepers? they could be making a cricket ladder and climbing out

They are getting out of the critter keepers...were you asking if they were getting out of the cham cage? The chams are in the house and the crickets are in the garage...one of them is one that did have the tubes in it...I removed the tubes and taped over the opening. I didn't do it too carefully as I wanted some air to get in...but I have no idea how they are finding these small holes and escaping.

I'm wondering how others keep them...obviously my way is not working...LOL!

I use like a 20 gallon rubbermaid container with hinged lids, they never get out, the tub cost me 4 bucks, hope that helps

I keep all sizes in 66 guqrt rubbermaids. No escapees and has more space..

i use 18 gallon rubbermaid containers. if you keep everything in there lower than halfway up the tub, you don't even need a lid.

Ditto........

You might also run a strip of 2" packing tape around the inside of the tub (a few inches down from the lip). This adds a slick layer that even the tiny ones can't seem to get over.

Hope this helps,

Kristen, I have my big crix in 10 gallon tanks and the little ones in the slick sided Sterlite containers. The plastic on the critter keeper may be rough enough for them to get a foot hold and alos maybe not tall enough. i find glass to be the best (but that's if you have extra tanks around.) I have heard some say they climb up the sealant in the corners, but I have yet to see that happen. Do you have enough hiding places for all of them to be "comfortable" over crowding will cause them to look for escape routes.
