Breeder Rabbits???

toddbecker Nov 01, 2003 02:06 AM

I posted this question in the Burmese forum before I realized that they had a feeder forum so I am sorry if I offend anyone for double posting but here goes. I am going to start breeding my own rabbits and was wondering what breed of rabbit is recommended. I want a rabbit that will exceed ten pounds and have good mass. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thank you Todd

Rabbits are pretty easy to breed. I believe that the Californian or New Zealands would be a good choice and both should be easily aquired since they are pretty much standard meat rabbits.

While you are at it you may want to raise some for yourself. Good Eating!

Calis are too fatty....i no i raise rabbits for show...new Zealands get 10-12 pounds...solid white....STAY AWAY FROM ANGORAS....AND DWARFS..... so start breeding new zealands....there GREAT breeders great feeders....ive never did that though..New zealands are very gentle though...and look like balls of fluff when lil...rember to pre kill....rabbits can HURT

I didn't realize that Calis were fatty. I have only kept and showed mini lops. I did the show circuits for almost 10 years, got started when my son needed a 4-H project and kept going after he graduated and went into the military. When they judged the butcher pens the rabbits were usually New Zealands or Calis so I just figured these were the meat rabbits.

I recall from with mini lops that I butchered that they had virtually no fat at all. Of course, the fat content will vary with the age of the rabbit. The old ones are going to have more fat than the younger butcher size rabbits but even then it was very minimal, nothing like chickens! I did know however that New Zealands are the ones that are raised most frequently for butcher and for research.
