Wake Up Time

lizard-lady Nov 01, 2003 08:18 AM

Does it take a long time for the Uros to wake in the morning? I put Orion's lights on at 7AM and here it is 9:15AM and he is still in his cave. Yesterday he didn't wake up until 11:30 -12:00.

What is the temperature in the cage where he is sleeping? Many Uro's will not wake up until it is at least 85, sometimes 90 . It is also the time of year that our guys are slowing down for the winter, which could affect him.

My cage is between 85 and 90 at night. Maybe be your right he is slowing down even though he is a juvie.

You should probably let your cage cool to room temperature at night (65-70 degrees). This is a normal thing in the deserts where they come from - high day temps, much cooler nights, and if they don't get a cooling period each day to rest and regenerate, it can cause strees on their bodies and make them more prone to illness.

I also had problems with Arthur not waking up. I moved her hide a little closer to the warm side of the cage, so she would heat up faster. She does just fine, now.

Hi Torey. Well it's 11;30AM here and Orion just peeked out his cave then went back to sleep. I allowed the cage to go down to 70 last night and now it is up to 90. What am I doing wrong? By the time he cames out of his cave it will be night time again.

Yesterday my room got quite cold, more than normal. As a result, my mali's tank didn't get hot enough. He opened his eyes, but didn't do more than that yesterday. Today I made the appropriate corrections and now hes quite active. I usually bump the heat up for the first few hours of the morning to get him up and active, then settle it down to a more normal temp of about 115-120 on the hot side and 70-80 on the cool. I've found this works quite well. Hope that helps.

How do you drop the temp? Do you use a dimmer?

Is Orion eating? I know you just got him, so this is a settling in time for him, too. If he is eating, pooping, and not losing weight, then I wouldn't worry too much. He could just be settling in. It could be the time of year. Or it could just be him, too. Joe is out almost all day, but Arthur only comes out for a couple of hours a day.

I'm not sure what else to suggest other than to give him a little time. Too much change day after day is stressful, too.

He'll come around, I'm sure!

I just got done hand feeding Orion! So yes he is eating. He was just eating the millet for a couple of days. He's been active for about 2 hours now. He ate a couple small pieces of romaine lettuce. So he seems to be ok now.

I've found that Ra will remain in his hide for longer periods when it is raining outside. I am beginning to think that uros are sensitive to barometric changes. They know when the weather is nice and when it is not. When it is sunny, Ra is very active. When it rains, he stays in his hide for most of the day or until the weather becomes nice again. Perhaps Orion could be reacting to the weather as well?

Hope this helps
