Good Gecko species question(Any Expirenced Gecko-herpers WANTED!!!!!!!!!!)

LizardLuva Nov 01, 2003 10:51 AM

Hi, i am only 13 years old but is an expirenced herper. I have always wanted to have small geckoes, and have an empty 5 and 10 gallon tanks. I was wondering, are there any geckoes that are inexpensive to buy the lizard(under 20$, or under that for a pair), that i could house most likely 2 in a ten gallon aquarium? I know that breeding is not "the best thing to do" but i was looking for a species that might breed easily. One other thing, i do NOT want any leopeard geckos. also, are house geckoes easy to breed? Thanks.

Nic

How many times are you going to ask this question? You already got lots of replies before...no need to ask the same exact question again, because you will get the same answers.

Pictus geckos, and house geckos are small and cheap. I heard pictus are very easy to breed (actually, its hard NOT to get them to breed).

House geckos (Hemidactylus and Cosymbotus) are also easy, and stay small. I would only put 1 in a 5 gallon, and 2 in a 10.

Whatever you decide, be sure to have everything set up and food ready before you do anything.

ps- I always thought you were just a beginner. What experience do you have exactly? There are alot of other small reptiles you can keep in a 10g, but should be kept more by experienced herpers only.

nope not a beginner, i have kept a few store bought lizards, such as anoles, also when i lived in NC i kept Garter snakes(kept on fish), a few box turtles, a rescued baby snapping turtle, and a few of the five lined skinks; i have also taken care of bearded dragons for my vet when she was on vacation and an iguana when my friend was at summer camp. I was going to get a tegu, but i guess im not ready for one, so i am probably going to get a bearded dragon and a pair of geckoes, so i can keep them before my bearded so i can breed crickets and have sumwhere for them to go. Thats why i was looking for a inexpensive lizard to breed for a local pet store, (very well kept animals, very clean, very healthy, and not aggresive due to handling,) who would take the babies. Also, how expensive would a pair of pictus geckoes run me at an expo, if i bought babies/juveniles?(hopefully a male & female)

also does anyone know how easy it is to breed house geckoes, thanks!

p.s. srry nasr i kept getting told to go out and get a $70 lizard when i only have a slow and steady income, enough to maintain a lizard, i have $67.60 saved up from the past month.

Ok, you should rethink the pet store thing. The pet store may TELL you they will take all you can produce but that is totally different when you are producing 10-15 babies and they aren't moving them. They might buy 2-3 at a time. Not to mention that house geckos don't sell well in pet stores. Pictus MIGHT, depends on the location.

Now why are you so against leopards? Because they are 70 bucks in a pet store? Check out the shows. I personally sell my juvies at the shows for 20-25 bucks. Heck, at daytona I saw albinos 2/30 bucks.

thanks, i would of liked to get a breeding pair when they were young, could i buy one from some one that has temp. controlled incubation (i think i have heard that gender depends on temperature...) i havent been to any expos yet so i dont no the s=average prices. Can i keep a pair in a 10 gallon? my mom likes albinos so i think that might be a good idea to find a good pair of them!Any more input on leos is accepted!

i seen leo's at expo's for as little as $10(juvi's and baby's)

i bought an adult pair of females for $50.

a leo anywhere from 10-25 each is normal at shows while adults are usually higher at about 25-50(normal/high yellow/albinos).

so if you have roughly $70 you can easily get a breeding pair of normals or high yellows if you look around.

if you buy at the end of the show i see no reason they wouldnt cut you a deal 3 for 70.00(probly only normals)

some breeders will practicly give away over stock cheap just to make room, so if you go to an expo and a table has tons of a certian geckos hold out till the end and ask for a deal and you'll probly get one.
