Tortoise/Box Turtle Together???

thelord Nov 01, 2003 12:07 PM

Hi,
I currently own 2 box turtles that I keep in an 4' by 4' enclosure. I was looking at getting a Leopard or Yellow Foot baby tortoise. When it is still small enough for the enclosure would it be ok to keep the 2 box turtles and the tortoise together? I would really appreciate any advice!!!
Thanks!!!
Steve

If the boxies are WC I don't think it would be a good idea because I've found that WC boxies (as a rule) carry a huge amount of different parasites. The odds are that the Leopard would definately be toast after a time. You might be able to get away with it for a time with a yellowfoot but both species are not very tolerant of others. All around, in such a small area there are just too many chances you are taking and I don't think it is a good idea.

Never mix 2 different species together or keep one where a previous species was kept without thorough disinfecting.
Each species has it's own paracites/ bacteria/ viruses etc. that each can usually deal with, but would be dangerous or fatal to another. There are few exceptions to this rule and those should be left to experts. If you see mixed species in a cage in a petstore--stay away!!!!
